Van Nuys definitely boasts its own local flavor and style, most easily showcased along the palm-lined streets of its main Downtown avenue, Van Nuys Boulevard. Here, you’ll find rows of local shops, restaurants, cafes, and businesses sandwiched between big-box retailers and major chain restaurants.

Van Nuys is also home to the renowned Van Nuys Airport, which can be glimpsed in the background of many classic TV movies and shows, and is one of the the oldest and busiest general aviation airports in the world. Its iconic runways regularly see the planes of celebrities, athletes, and leaders from around the world.

Though located in the heart of big-city LA, Van Nuys offers plenty of opportunities to get outside and get active. The Van Nuys Recreation Area and Delano Park are home to amenities such as gymnasiums, auditoriums, baseball, softball, football, and soccer fields, tennis, basketball, and handball courts, scenic picnic and barbecue areas, and playgrounds. The adjacent Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area offers numerous recreation facilities, including a wildlife preserve, a cricket field, an archery range, a golf course, a breathtaking Japanese Garden, and miles of hiking and biking trails.

The Metro Orange Line Bike Path stretches from the Sepulveda Basin Recreation area to the east and west across Van Nuys, connecting the neighborhood to other communities throughout the area.

You don’t have to go far to find everything you need, from shopping and dining to services, healthcare, and amenities. A wealth of businesses and services can be found along Van Nuys Boulevard, which houses local shops and restaurants, as well as major businesses and companies. The Plant, also located on the Boulevard, is home to big-box retailers and restaurants, as well as a large movie theater. Also in the neighborhood is the Valley Presbyterian Hospital, the first and currently the largest non-profit hospital in the Valley.

Van Nuys is served by Los Angeles Unified School District. Among the top schools in the neighborhood are Van Nuys High School, which was rated an A by school rater Niche.com, and High Tech Los Angeles, a charter school ranked at #9 in LAUSD. Other unique and highly-rated schools within the district include Robert Fulton College Preparatory, Will Rogers Continuation School, Van Nuys Adult School, and the NVOC-Aviation Center.

There are also several private schools in the community, as well as the Charter High School of the Arts, a multimedia and performing arts school.

Getting Around

Central location and a wealth of options for transportation place Van Nuys within easy reach of all the metro Los Angeles area. It is served by the Metro Orange Line (which connects to the Metro Red Line at North Hollywood) at two stations—Van Nuys and Sepulveda. It’s also home to the FlyAway Bus Service, which connects to the LA International Airport, and offers easy access to major highways such as the San Diego Freeway, the Ventura Freeway, and the Hollywood Freeway.
